Microbiological research

Microbiological testing is a group of laboratory analyses aimed at detecting bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms in the human body. These studies allow the diagnosis of infectious diseases, determination of pathogen susceptibility to antibiotics, and monitoring of treatment effectiveness.

When are microbiological tests required?

In cases of frequent infections, prolonged inflammatory processes, fever of unknown origin, and suspected bacterial, viral, or fungal infections. They are used in the diagnosis of intestinal, urogenital, respiratory infections, tuberculosis, as well as fungal infections of the skin and internal organs. Microbiological testing is also applied to assess the microbiota of the intestines, oral cavity, and genitourinary system, and to select effective antibiotic therapy for bacterial infections.

Types of microbiological tests

  • Bacteriological culture (culture test) – detection and identification of bacteria in blood, urine, sputum, stool, and swabs from the nose, throat, and genital tract.
  • Antibiotic susceptibility testing (antibiogram) – determination of bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics to guide effective treatment.
  • Microscopy of smears – a rapid method for detecting bacteria, fungi, and protozoa.
  • PCR diagnostics – detection of DNA or RNA of viruses, bacteria, and fungi.
  • Dysbiosis testing – assessment of intestinal microbiota composition.
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) – detection of antibodies to various infectious agents.

How is the testing performed?

Collection of biological material (blood, urine, stool, swabs, sputum) depends on the type of test performed. Some analyses require special preparation, such as discontinuation of antibiotic therapy several days before sample collection.

Main advantages of microbiological testing in Belarus
