Rapid tests for newborns
Rapid tests for newborns

Express tests for newborns are screening examinations that allow rapid detection of congenital diseases, infections, and genetic abnormalities in the first days of life. These tests help initiate timely treatment and prevent the development of serious complications.

When are express tests for newborns required?

Immediately after birth as part of neonatal screening. In cases of suspected congenital metabolic, genetic, or infectious diseases. When there is a family history of hereditary conditions, prematurity, or birth asphyxia. To detect metabolic disorders, enzyme deficiencies, congenital hypothyroidism, and cystic fibrosis.

Main types of express tests for newborns

  • Neonatal screening – mandatory testing for inherited diseases (phenylketonuria, congenital hypothyroidism, cystic fibrosis, galactosemia, congenital adrenal hyperplasia).
  • Rapid blood tests – detection of bilirubin levels (neonatal jaundice), glucose, and infections (sepsis, TORCH infections).
  • Pulse oximetry – detection of congenital heart defects by measuring blood oxygen saturation.
  • Hearing screening (auditory screening) – early diagnosis of congenital hearing loss.
  • Genetic express tests – identification of predisposition to metabolic disorders and genetic mutations.

How is the test performed?

Capillary blood (heel-prick test), saliva, urine, or a skin sensor (pulse oximetry) is used for analysis. The examinations are safe and minimally invasive and are performed during the first days of the newborn’s life.
