A coagulation profile (coagulogram) is a laboratory blood test that assesses blood clotting and helps identify risks of thrombosis, bleeding, and disorders of the coagulation system. The test is widely used in cardiology, surgery, hematology, and during pregnancy.
When is a coagulation profile required?
In cases of frequent bleeding, a tendency to bruise easily, recurrent nosebleeds, and slow wound healing. For the diagnosis of thrombosis, thrombophilia, varicose vein disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke. To monitor coagulation before surgical procedures and after anticoagulant therapy (warfarin, heparin). During pregnancy, it is used to assess the risk of preeclampsia, complications, and disorders of placental blood flow.
Main parameters of the coagulation profile
- Prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR) – assessment of blood clotting and monitoring of anticoagulant therapy.
- APTT (activated partial thromboplastin time) – diagnosis of coagulation disorders and detection of clotting factor deficiencies.
- Fibrinogen – the level of a protein responsible for clot formation.
- D-dimer – a marker of clot formation, used in the diagnosis of thrombosis and thromboembolism.
- Antithrombin III – a protein that regulates coagulation processes.
How is the test performed?
Blood is drawn from a vein in the morning on an empty stomach. It is recommended to avoid fatty foods, alcohol, smoking, and physical exertion for 24 hours before the test.
Main advantages of the coagulation profile
High diagnostic accuracy for detecting coagulation disorders. The ability to identify risks of thrombosis, myocardial infarction, stroke, and hemophilia. Effective monitoring of blood status before surgery, during pregnancy, and while taking anticoagulant medications.
