When are bacteriological studies required?
In cases of infections of the respiratory tract, genitourinary system, skin, and gastrointestinal tract. - Sputum culture – diagnosis of tuberculosis, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
- Swab cultures (from the throat, nose, vagina, urethra) – identification of pathogens causing respiratory and urogenital infections.
- Helicobacter pylori culture – diagnosis of bacterial gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.
How is the examination performed?
Sample collection depends on the type of test: blood, urine, stool, sputum, or swabs are placed in a nutrient medium to allow bacterial growth. After 3–7 days, the pathogen is identified and antibiotic susceptibility testing is performed.
