Laryngoscopy is an endoscopic diagnostic method used to examine the larynx and vocal cords, allowing detection of inflammatory, neoplastic, and functional disorders of the vocal apparatus. The procedure is performed using a specialized instrument called a laryngoscope.
When is laryngoscopy indicated?
Laryngoscopy is indicated in cases of hoarseness, breathing difficulties, frequent throat irritation, or persistent cough. It is used for the diagnosis of laryngitis, laryngeal stenosis, tumors, polyps, and papillomas. The procedure also helps identify vocal cord paralysis, traumatic injuries, and anatomical abnormalities. It is recommended when laryngeal cancer is suspected and prior to surgical interventions.
How is the examination performed?
The patient is seated with the head tilted backward, and local anesthesia is applied to the mucous membrane. The physician inserts a flexible or rigid laryngoscope through the mouth or nose to examine the larynx, vocal cords, and trachea. If necessary, a biopsy may be performed. The procedure typically lasts 5–15 minutes.
