Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy (FGDS, esophagogastroduodenoscopy) is an endoscopic diagnostic procedure that allows detailed examination of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum using a flexible gastroscope. The examination is used to detect inflammatory, ulcerative, neoplastic, and infectious diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.

When is gastroscopy required?

The procedure is indicated for stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, and digestive disorders. It is performed when gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, erosions, polyps, tumors, or gastrointestinal bleeding are suspected. Gastroscopy is also used to diagnose Helicobacter pylori infection, assess the condition of the gastrointestinal mucosa, obtain tissue samples for biopsy, remove polyps, or achieve endoscopic hemostasis.

How is the procedure performed?

The patient lies in a lateral position; local throat anesthesia is applied or conscious sedation (light anesthesia) may be used. A thin endoscope equipped with a camera and instruments is inserted through the mouth. The physician examines the inner surface of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum and, if necessary, performs therapeutic interventions. The procedure typically lasts 5–15 minutes.

Main advantages of gastroscopy in Belarus

High diagnostic accuracy for gastrointestinal diseases with the possibility of obtaining biopsy material. Minimally invasive nature of the procedure with rapid recovery. The ability to perform therapeutic interventions, such as polyp removal and coagulation of bleeding ulcers.

Belarusian medical centers are equipped with modern endoscopic systems that ensure detailed diagnostics and patient comfort. Experienced specialists perform the examination with high precision and minimal discomfort.
