Cystoscopy
Cystoscopy

Cystoscopy is an endoscopic diagnostic procedure that allows detailed examination of the inner surface of the urinary bladder and the urethra. The procedure is performed using a specialized instrument called a cystoscope and is used to detect inflammatory, oncological, and functional disorders of the urinary tract.

When is cystoscopy indicated?

Cystoscopy is indicated in cases of recurrent bladder infections, painful urination, and the presence of blood in the urine. It is used for diagnosing cystitis, bladder tumors, and urolithiasis. The procedure helps identify urethral strictures (narrowings), polyps, and congenital anomalies of the urinary tract. It is also performed when interstitial cystitis or chronic inflammatory processes are suspected.

How is the examination performed?

The patient lies in a supine position, and local or spinal anesthesia is administered. A thin cystoscope is inserted through the urethra, allowing the physician to examine the inner surface of the bladder and, if necessary, obtain tissue samples for biopsy. The procedure typically lasts 10–30 minutes.
