Cholangiopancreatography is a contrast-enhanced imaging method used to examine the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreatic ducts. The procedure allows detection of gallstones, tumors, inflammatory processes, and structural abnormalities in these organs.
Types of cholangiopancreatography
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – performed using an endoscope through which a contrast agent is introduced, followed by X-ray imaging.
- Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) – a non-invasive method that uses MRI to visualize the biliary and pancreatic ducts without contrast administration.
- Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) – performed via a skin and liver puncture with direct injection of contrast into the bile ducts.
When is cholangiopancreatography indicated?
The procedure is indicated in cases of right upper quadrant abdominal pain, jaundice, and digestive disorders. It is used for diagnosing gallstone disease, cholangitis, pancreatitis, cysts, and tumors. Cholangiopancreatography helps identify strictures (narrowings) of the biliary and pancreatic ducts as well as congenital anomalies. It is also performed during preoperative planning for surgeries involving the biliary tract and pancreas.
How is the examination performed?
Depending on the selected method, a contrast agent is administered via an endoscope, intravenously, or percutaneously. This is followed by X-ray imaging or MRI scanning to obtain detailed images of the bile and pancreatic ducts. The procedure duration ranges from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Main advantages of cholangiopancreatography in Belarus
High diagnostic accuracy for diseases of the biliary tract and pancreas. The possibility of performing therapeutic interventions during endoscopic procedures, such as stone removal or stent placement. In certain cases, the method serves as an alternative to surgical intervention.
Belarusian medical centers are equipped with modern radiological, endoscopic, and MRI systems that ensure precise diagnostics of biliary and pancreatic diseases. Experienced specialists perform examinations with high accuracy and minimal patient discomfort.
