Capsule endoscopy is a next-generation diagnostic method for examining the stomach and other parts of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), allowing visualization of intestinal areas that are inaccessible to conventional gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The procedure is non-invasive and painless. Its key advantages include atraumatic performance, the absence of anesthesia, and overall ease and comfort for the patient compared with other diagnostic methods of the GIT.
Capsule endoscopy enables the physician to examine three segments of the small intestine: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. There are also capsule modifications designed for detailed examination of the esophagus and the large intestine.
Capsule endoscopy has been used in our clinic since 2013 to the present day. More than 120 video capsule examinations have been performed. In our practice, we have used SB2, SB3, COLON, and PATENCY capsules manufactured by Given Imaging Ltd (Israel).
A video capsule the size of a standard vitamin pill is used as the endoscopic device and can be easily swallowed. As it moves through the gastrointestinal tract by natural peristalsis, the capsule transmits images reflecting the condition of the digestive system.
The capsule is activated immediately after being removed from its packaging. The patient then swallows the capsule, which contains a miniature video camera, processor, and power source. The capsule advances through the digestive tract due to peristaltic movement. High-quality images of the entire gastrointestinal tract are obtained thanks to a sensitive image sensor and an optimized frame capture rate. The recording device ensures reliable and stable reception of the signal transmitted by the capsule. Capsule movement and patient activity are monitored by specialized software integrated into the recording unit, which is worn on a belt. Real-time images can be viewed throughout the procedure. After completion of the study, the physician reviews the images on a computer and refers the patient to a gastroenterologist with the examination results. The capsule is excreted naturally. The examination lasts approximately 7–8 hours, and the patient does not need to remain in a medical facility, as the device does not interfere with daily activities.
The video capsule is single-use, completely safe for the patient, and is naturally eliminated from the body.
