Bronchoscopy is an endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows detailed examination of the trachea and bronchi using a special device called a bronchoscope. The examination is used to detect inflammatory, oncological, infectious, and obstructive diseases of the respiratory tract.
When is bronchoscopy required?
The procedure is indicated for persistent cough, shortness of breath, hemoptysis, and suspected tumors or tuberculosis. It is used in the diagnosis of chronic bronchitis, inflammatory conditions, lung abscesses, and bronchial asthma. Bronchoscopy is also performed to detect foreign bodies, assess the condition of the bronchi before surgery, obtain tissue samples for biopsy, remove mucus, or administer medications directly into the airways.
How is the procedure performed?
The patient undergoes local or general anesthesia, after which a flexible bronchoscope equipped with a camera and instruments is inserted through the nose or mouth. During the procedure, the physician examines the inner surface of the airways and, if necessary, collects tissue samples or removes pathological formations. The examination lasts 10–30 minutes.
