Cardiac CT is a high-precision diagnostic method that allows detailed visualization of the coronary arteries, myocardium, heart valves, pericardium, and major vessels. The method is used to detect coronary artery disease, congenital and acquired heart defects, aneurysms, inflammatory conditions, and tumor-related changes.

When is cardiac CT required?

The examination is indicated for chest pain, shortness of breath, arrhythmias, and elevated blood pressure. It is used in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD), coronary artery stenosis, and vascular calcification. Cardiac CT helps identify congenital heart defects, myocarditis, pericarditis, and intracardiac thrombi. It is also performed during preoperative planning for cardiac surgery, stenting, or coronary artery bypass grafting.

How is the examination performed?

The patient is positioned in a computed tomography scanner, where imaging of the heart and coronary vessels is performed. In most cases, a contrast agent is administered to enhance visualization of the vascular network. The procedure takes 10–30 minutes, is painless, and requires minimal preparation (patients may be advised to avoid caffeine and smoking before the examination).
